The Longship by Loren Nicole

This extraordinary Longship took more than 1,000 hours to create over a period of two years. All the gold elements were formed by Loren Teetelli, and as with her jewelry she strove to incorporate ancient goldsmithing techniques. The ship includes chasing, repousse, granulation, woven chain, filigree, and more. The rock crystal elements are custom-cut lapidary work from Idar Oberstein.

The woven sail becomes a bracelet. Two shields become earrings and the other shields and rock crystal oars can be worn on a chain elegantly nestled in a compartment under the floor. The dragon masthead forms a jabot stickpin. Loren Tetelli (the goldsmith behind Loren Nicole) said, “I was inspired to create this object because I kept thinking about the shape and idea of a Viking ship. It occurred to me that I could make a ship that comes apart and is wearable as jewelry. I wanted it to have function.”

More than a thousand years ago graceful, narrow ships such as this one explored the northern seas. They were built for speed and symmetrically, to allow for quick reversal in direction. They shallow bottom allowed for portage and beach landings. The functional and beautiful shape represents the strength and curiosity of the Viking explorers. The dragon masthead is a representation of Jörmungandr, the Midgard serpent, who encircles the earth representing life and eternity.

A 22kt gold Viking ship, with crystal, granulated and wire work detail, the ships sail, oars and shields detachable to convert to a bracelet, necklace and earrings, on twin crystal stands, in a fitted leather box
